That Gory Animated Movie Ending That Haunts Fans
Out of all the mature animated films I’ve ever watched, nothing has remained with me as much as the fear-filled ending of the graphically gory as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish writer-director crafted a dark, bleak and frequently brutal universe with a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars appears as it stemmed from a desire to expand animation further, the director explained that it was rather a try to express a universal, multicultural message about “the mutual source of each battle.”
This theme is expressed via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly modeled after a well-known series of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a society centered on warmongering and the war machine, a lot of these creatures are fixated on killing unicorns, thanks to a sacred text which states them they previously were masters of the woodland, before the unicorns drove them out.
A few have not completely bought into the propaganda, and prefer to experiment with substances or fornicate in the forest.
In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these colorful critters display sexual organs and clear urges.
For a particular especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a path toward dominance — and specifically to authority over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively , an obvious psychopath , and when fear takes over his squad and claims his teammates one by one, he seizes progressively power on his own behalf, via progressively violent, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, in the form of a growing, destructive monster in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker said. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sad movie. And by the end, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out resembling one of the most whimsical features from an iconic filmmaker, that discover a wicked pleasure in allowing drawn beings swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Afterward it becomes something more like a more grim film from that director, with increasingly explicit brutality , a tangible connection to the real suffering of conflict.
In the finale, it becomes an outright extreme drama bloodbath.
The terror which makes the film an ideal spooky-season watch starts much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted fans of gore, for lovers of extreme cinema who wish to view something they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story that offers unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dark room free from interruptions, and the conclusion will dig into your mind and take up residence there.
