NY Unveils Portal for Residents to Report Immigration Videos Following Arrests of Four US Citizens
New York state AG has rolled out a new online portal urging locals to provide visual evidence of ICE operations throughout the state. This step follows a day after a major immigration operation shook Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting widespread demonstrations.
US Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action
A US congressman revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents deserves to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a release.
"If you witnessed and documented immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The form includes spaces to submit images and video footage of the operation, along with a section to indicate geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must mark a option that confirms that "authorities might employ any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a court case or official statement."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included over fifty ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known district of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded en masse – often to sightseers.
Footage of the operation depict numerous masked and armed federal agents zip-tying and detaining a individual, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of locals pursued the officers along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
At a Wednesday press conference held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman said. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to bring in the military to prevent unrest that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Anger over the ICE raid escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the raid, as did NY's governor.
"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for oppressive displays that create fear, not safety. It needs to cease," a contender stated.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.
"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and riot gear to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," said the leader of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Agency rules prohibits the arrest of American nationals and the organization has stated it refrains from take into custody citizens. Yet, independent reporting has found that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the present government.
Current Situation
Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in the state and nationwide this year.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are widespread along with accusations of violence and cruel conditions.
Latest, a document filed by legal entities claimed inadequate care of women with child in government custody.
