Citizens have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to examine the terms of the agreement.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations revealed that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war governance of the territory

Civilian Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "No place appears as home now and until each abducted person return not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everyone home again, we can relax once more. Then we can commence heal," she continued.

Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester a participant remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population desire the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the night arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who puts his face on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had received the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, health workers said.
