California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This landmark event follows grueling years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated wildfire risks and strained its massive agricultural sector.

An Update Shows An Absence of Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is free from dry or drought conditions. This change was driven by a period of heavy precipitation that topped up key lakes like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their long-term norms.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a climate scientist.

After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status featured intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, regions like northeastern California were considered experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the start of the new year washed away those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern

However, authorities caution that being out of drought should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it runs off, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
