Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
