Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
